Your first week in a new home matters. Complete these 6 tasks to get settled safely and start strong.
The first week in a new home sets the tone for everything that follows. These December priority tasks will help you get settled safely and start your new chapter on the right foot.
1. Change All the Locks
You don't know who has keys from before. Previous owners, contractors, or real estate agents might still have copies. Change locks immediately for security and peace of mind. In Miami neighborhoods like Coral Gables or Coconut Grove, many locksmiths offer same-day service.

2. Test All Appliances
Run the dishwasher, check the stove, test the washer/dryer. Identify problems while warranty claims are still fresh.
3. Locate Emergency Shutoffs
Find and label water main, electrical panel, and gas shutoff. You'll need to know these eventually, so it's better to find them now. In South Florida, knowing your water shutoff is especially important during hurricane season when pipes can burst from pressure changes.

4. Set Up Mail Forwarding
Visit USPS.com to ensure nothing gets lost during the transition period. This should happen before you move.
5. Transfer Utilities to Your Name
Electricity, gas, water, internet: confirm all accounts are active and in your name before move-in day. For Miami-Dade residents, FPL handles electricity while Miami-Dade Water and Sewer covers water service. Set these up at least a week in advance to avoid delays.

6. Schedule Critical Installations
Internet, cable, security systems: book these early as installation windows fill up quickly.
