# 6 Things You Should Never Store in a Storage Unit

Storage facilities have rules about what's allowed inside their units, and violating those rules can void your rental agreement, create safety hazards, and expose you to legal liability. Some of these restrictions are obvious. Others surprise people, especially when they're clearing out a Miami home and trying to store everything fast.

1. Flammable Liquids and Gases

Gasoline, propane tanks, paint thinner, kerosene, and lighter fluid are banned at every reputable storage facility. These materials release vapors that accumulate in enclosed spaces, and a single spark from static electricity or a malfunctioning light can trigger an explosion. In Miami's heat, the risk increases because higher temperatures accelerate vapor release. Pool chemicals, which are common in South Florida households, also fall into this category. Chlorine-based pool shock and muriatic acid are both restricted. Dispose of these through Miami-Dade County's household hazardous waste program instead.

2. Perishable Food

Any food that can spoil, rot, or attract pests has no place in a storage unit. This includes canned goods (cans can burst in heat), pet food, cooking oils, spices, and opened packages of anything edible. Miami's year-round warm temperatures mean pests are always active. Roaches, ants, mice, and rats can detect food through sealed containers and will find their way into units to reach it. Even sealed protein bars and individually wrapped snacks attract unwanted visitors. Leave all food at home, donate it, or throw it away before your storage move.

3. Living Things

This sounds absurd, but it happens. Plants, animals, and even fish tanks have been found in storage units. Plants die within days from lack of light and irregular temperatures. Animals suffer and die in enclosed, potentially unventilated spaces. Beyond the ethical and legal issues, both plants and animals introduce moisture, organic matter, and pests that damage your other stored items. If you're traveling and need care for pets or plants, arrange for a sitter, not a storage unit.

4. Unregistered Firearms and Ammunition

While some facilities allow properly stored, legally registered firearms, ammunition is almost universally prohibited. Rounds stored in high heat (common in Miami's standard storage units) can become unstable, and in extreme cases, discharge spontaneously. If you need to store firearms during a move, look for a facility specifically licensed for firearm storage, or check with a local gun shop about temporary holding services.

5. Wet or Damp Items

Anything that hasn't fully dried before going into storage becomes a mold breeding ground. Wet clothing, damp towels, recently washed outdoor furniture cushions, and items that got rained on during loading all carry enough moisture to start a mold colony. In South Florida's already humid environment, adding moisture sources to a storage unit accelerates the problem. Mold doesn't stay on the damp item. It spreads to boxes, furniture, and fabrics throughout the unit. Make sure everything is bone dry before it goes in.

6. Anything Irreplaceable Without Backup

This isn't about facility rules but about common sense. Original birth certificates, the only copy of your wedding video, family heirloom jewelry without insurance documentation, original artwork that isn't photographed or appraised. Storage facilities experience break-ins, floods, fires, and hurricane damage despite best efforts. If losing an item would be devastating and there's no copy, backup, or insurance to cover it, find a safer location. A bank safe deposit box, a fireproof home safe, or a trusted family member's house offers better protection for truly irreplaceable items.
