Just moved to Florida City? Discover the best farmers markets, parks, and free family activities in your new community.
You signed the lease, unpacked the boxes, and now you are looking for things to do. Florida City sits at the southern tip of mainland Miami-Dade County, and while it may not have the nightlife of Brickell, it has something better for families: affordable weekend fun with genuine character. Here is your guide to the best markets, parks, and free activities in and around your new hometown.
Robert Is Here: The Legendary Fruit Stand
No list of Florida City activities would be incomplete without Robert Is Here, the iconic fruit stand at 19200 SW 344th Street. Open since 1959, it sells tropical fruits you will not find at Publix: jackfruit, mamey sapote, dragon fruit, and sapodilla. The milkshakes are legendary. Kids love the small animal area out back with goats, tortoises, and parrots.

Robert Is Here is open daily from 8am to 7pm. Arrive early on spring weekends to beat the tourist crowds heading to the Everglades and the Keys.
Florida City Farmers Market
The local farmers market runs on weekends and offers fresh produce, honey, baked goods, and plants from South Dade growers. Prices are noticeably lower than what you will pay at grocery stores for the same quality produce. Look for avocados, mangoes, and lychees in the spring and early summer months when South Dade orchards are at peak harvest.
The market is a good place to meet your neighbors and learn about the local food scene. Vendors are happy to share cooking tips for tropical fruits that may be unfamiliar to newcomers.
Everglades National Park: Your Backyard
The Ernest Coe Visitor Center, the main entrance to Everglades National Park, is less than 15 minutes from most Florida City addresses. An annual pass costs $30 per vehicle and gives you unlimited access to one of the most unique ecosystems on the planet.
Spring is a great time to visit. Water levels are dropping, which concentrates wildlife around remaining pools. You will see alligators, wading birds, and turtles along the Anhinga Trail. The Royal Palm Visitor Center has ranger-led walks that are free with park admission.
Kayaking and Airboat Tours
Several outfitters along US-1 and Krome Avenue offer kayak rentals and guided airboat tours. Kayaking through the mangroves of Florida Bay is a peaceful morning activity, and most tours run about two hours. Airboat tours are louder but a hit with kids who want to see gators up close.
Biscayne National Park
Most people forget that Biscayne National Park is also right here. The Dante Fascell Visitor Center at Convoy Point in Homestead offers free entry, a small museum, and picnic areas on the waterfront. Snorkeling trips to the reef and glass-bottom boat tours depart from the same location. This is one of the most underrated national parks in the country, and it is a short drive from your front door.

Local Parks Worth Visiting
Florida City Community Park
This is the go-to park for families. It has a playground, basketball courts, a walking track, and covered picnic shelters. Community events are held here throughout the year, and it is never as crowded as the parks further north in Miami-Dade.
Gateway Park
A smaller neighborhood park with open green space, benches, and a playground. Good for an after-dinner walk or a quick outing with young children.
Free Community Events
Florida City hosts free movie nights, holiday festivals, and community gatherings throughout the year. The city's parks and recreation department posts events on their website and social media pages. Spring brings outdoor concerts and food truck nights as the weather settles into warm but manageable evenings.
Homestead-Miami Speedway
Even if you are not a racing fan, the Speedway hosts events beyond NASCAR. Car shows, swap meets, and community festivals use the venue throughout the year. Check their events calendar for family-friendly days with discounted or free entry.

Making Florida City Home
The best part of living in Florida City is how quickly the community starts to feel familiar. The weekend routine practically builds itself: Robert Is Here for milkshakes, the farmers market for produce, and the Everglades for a family walk. Within a month, you will know the vendors by name and the park rangers by sight.
