# Moving a Grandfather Clock: A Specialist Guide

Grandfather clocks are tall, top-heavy, mechanically delicate, and often worth thousands of dollars. They also tend to be family heirlooms that can't be replaced at any price. Moving one from a Coral Gables colonial to a new home in Palmetto Bay requires more planning than most people expect, and one mistake can throw the entire movement out of alignment.

Understanding What's Inside

A grandfather clock isn't just a wooden case with a face. Inside, there's a precision pendulum, a set of weights (usually three, each weighing 5-15 pounds), chains or cables, and a mechanical movement that can include hundreds of individual parts. Howard Miller and Ridgeway clocks use different suspension spring designs, and each requires specific handling. Before we touch the exterior, we deal with the internals.

Securing the Movement

The pendulum comes out first. We wrap it in acid-free tissue paper followed by bubble cushion, and pack it in a separate box. The weights get removed next, each one wrapped individually and packed standing upright so the hooks don't bend. Chains or cables need to be immobilized. We use twist ties or painter's tape to secure them to the movement so they can't swing during transport and tangle or snap.

Protecting the Case

Grandfather clock cases range from solid oak to delicate walnut with glass panels on three sides. We remove glass side panels when possible, wrapping each in corner protectors and cardboard. The bonnet (top section) on many clocks lifts off separately and gets its own padded wrapping. The case itself gets a full moving blanket wrap secured with stretch film, never tape directly on wood or glass.

The Weight Distribution Problem

Grandfather clocks stand about 6 to 7 feet tall but are only 18-24 inches wide. That makes them dangerously top-heavy, even without the weights inside. We move them upright whenever possible, strapped to a padded hand truck with the back of the clock against the dolly. Laying a grandfather clock on its back is a last resort and only happens if doorways or stairs make upright transport impossible. If we do lay one down, it goes on its back, never its face.

Getting Through Miami Homes

Older homes in South Miami and the Gables often have narrow doorways and tight staircases. We measure every passage point during the pre-move walkthrough. If the clock won't clear a doorway upright, we assess whether the bonnet removal gives enough clearance. In high-rise condos, elevator dimensions are the limiting factor. Most freight elevators in Brickell and Downtown towers accommodate a grandfather clock upright, but we confirm measurements before moving day.

After the Move

Once the clock is positioned at the new home, it needs to be leveled precisely. A grandfather clock that's even slightly off-level won't keep accurate time and the pendulum may stop swinging. We use a bubble level on the case and adjust the feet until it's perfectly plumb. After leveling, the movement needs 24-48 hours to settle before fine-tuning the timekeeping. We recommend having a clock specialist visit within the first week to verify the movement is running correctly.
