# Slate vs MDF Pool Tables: How Moving Differs
Not all pool tables are built the same, and the material under the felt makes a huge difference when it comes time to move. Slate and MDF (medium-density fiberboard) are the two most common playing surfaces, and each one requires a different approach during disassembly, transport, and setup. Knowing which type you have before your move helps us plan the right crew, equipment, and timeline.
What's Under Your Felt?
If you're not sure what your table is made of, there are a few easy ways to tell:

- 1Check the weight: Try pushing the table. If it barely budges, you almost certainly have slate. A 7-foot slate table weighs 700 to 800 pounds. An MDF table of the same size weighs 200 to 350 pounds.
- 2Knock on the surface: Slate produces a dull, dense thud. MDF has a lighter, more hollow sound.
- 3Look at the price tag: If you paid under $1,500 for a new table, it's likely MDF. Slate tables typically start around $2,000 and go up from there.
- 4Check underneath: If you can access the underside, slate has a rough, gray stone surface. MDF looks like compressed wood fiber.
Moving a Slate Pool Table
Slate is the premium choice for pool tables because it provides the flattest, most consistent playing surface available. But that quality comes with serious weight and fragility. Here's how our Pool Table Moving team handles slate:
Disassembly is mandatory. A slate table cannot be safely moved assembled. The slate is typically a three-piece set, with each section weighing 150 to 250 pounds. We remove the rails, pockets, and felt, then use slate jacks to lift each piece off the frame individually.
Transport requires special care. Slate pieces travel upright, wrapped in thick moving blankets and secured with straps. They can never be stacked flat because road vibrations can cause hairline cracks along the seams. In Miami, we also use moisture barriers because the humidity can seep into the stone's pores during transit.
Reassembly takes precision. The three slate pieces must be perfectly aligned and leveled. We use machinist-level tools to check the surface at multiple points, then fill the seams with beeswax to create a smooth playing surface. Leveling on South Florida's slab-on-grade foundations is usually straightforward, but older homes with raised foundations can require more adjustment.
Moving an MDF Pool Table
MDF tables are lighter and less expensive, but they're not necessarily easier to move. In some ways, they're more vulnerable:
MDF is a single piece. Unlike slate, which comes in sections, MDF playing surfaces are usually one solid board. This means you can't break the surface down into smaller pieces. The entire board has to come off the frame and be transported as a single unit.
MDF doesn't handle moisture well. This is a big concern in Miami. MDF absorbs water like a sponge, and even moderate humidity can cause it to swell, warp, or delaminate. Once MDF warps, it can't be flattened. The table is permanently damaged. We wrap MDF surfaces in plastic moisture barriers for even short moves and avoid scheduling transport during heavy rain.
MDF is easier to damage on impact. While slate can chip, MDF dents and cracks from much less force. We handle MDF boards carefully and never lean them against hard surfaces during loading.
Leveling is different. MDF tables can sometimes be moved without full disassembly for very short relocations within the same room. But for any move involving a truck, full breakdown is still the right call. Leveling after reassembly is faster since there are no seams to fill, but an MDF surface that has started to warp will never level perfectly.
Cost Differences
Moving a slate table typically costs more than moving an MDF table because:

- 1More crew members are needed for the heavier slate pieces
- 2Disassembly and reassembly takes longer (3-4 hours for slate vs. 1.5-2 hours for MDF)
- 3Specialized slate-handling equipment is required
- 4Precision leveling with beeswax seam filling adds time
That said, the cost of moving your table is a fraction of the cost of replacing it. Cutting corners on a slate table move to save $100 can easily lead to a $2,000 repair.
