# Moving a Gun Safe: Weight, Equipment, and Planning

A gun safe sitting in a closet or garage feels like it has always been there. Then moving day arrives and reality sets in: that thing weighs somewhere between 400 and 2,000 pounds, and it needs to go from your house in Kendall to your new place in Weston without crashing through the floor, scratching the tile, or landing on someone's foot.

Know What You're Dealing With

Gun safes are built to resist break-ins, fire, and water damage. That means thick steel walls, concrete composite lining, and heavy-gauge doors with multiple locking bolts. A standard 24-gun safe weighs around 500 pounds. A commercial-grade 48-gun vault? Easily 1,200 pounds or more. Before anything moves, we measure the safe, weigh it (bathroom scales under each corner work in a pinch), and map the exit path down to the inch.

Clearing the Path

Most hallways in South Florida homes run about 36 inches wide. A full-size gun safe is typically 28-30 inches deep and 40 inches wide. That means tight corners, and doorframes become pinch points. We remove doors from hinges, lay down hardboard over tile and hardwood, and sometimes remove trim pieces that can be reinstalled after the safe passes through. In multi-story homes common in neighborhoods like Coral Springs and Pembroke Pines, stairway clearance gets measured at every turn.

Equipment That Makes It Possible

You're not muscling a 1,000-pound safe onto a hand truck. We use heavy-duty safe dollies rated for 1,800 pounds with pneumatic tires, stair-climbing attachments for multi-level homes, and 4-point ratchet straps to lock the safe to the dolly. For second-floor placements, we sometimes bring a hydraulic lift gate on the truck and use a crane service for balcony access in high-rise condos.

Protecting Your Floors

Gun safes destroy flooring. The concentrated weight on small contact points cracks tile, dents hardwood, and tears vinyl. We use plywood sheets as rolling paths, furniture sliders under the dolly wheels, and rubber padding at every transition point. At the destination, we place the safe on a steel plate or rubber mat to distribute weight, especially on upper floors where load-bearing capacity matters.

Planning the Timing

If the safe is in a garage, access is usually straightforward. If it's upstairs in a closet, we need to plan around other household activity and may do the safe move as a standalone job before or after the main household move. We also account for Florida heat. Working with 1,000-plus pounds in a garage at 2 PM in August is a safety hazard, so we schedule heavy safe moves for early morning.
