# Moving Fragile Antique Furniture Without Damage

Antique furniture survived decades or centuries before landing in your Miami home. The last thing anyone wants is a careless move to be the thing that finally damages it. Antiques have unique vulnerabilities: dried-out wood joints, original finishes that dissolve with modern solvents, veneer that lifts in humidity, and irreplaceable hardware. We treat every antique move as a restoration-grade handling project.

Assessing the Piece Before Moving Day

Every antique gets a pre-move inspection. We document existing damage with photographs, test joint stability by gently rocking the piece, and check for loose veneer, cracked legs, and fragile decorative elements. This matters for two reasons: it sets a baseline for insurance purposes, and it tells us where the weak points are. A Victorian settee with a loose arm joint needs that arm stabilized with soft clamps and padding before it goes anywhere.

The Humidity Factor in South Florida

Miami's humidity fluctuates between 60% and 90% year-round. Wood furniture constantly absorbs and releases moisture, which causes expansion and contraction. Moving a piece from an air-conditioned home at 50% humidity into a truck at 85% humidity creates rapid swelling that can pop veneer, crack inlays, and loosen glue joints. We minimize exposure time and use moisture barrier wrapping (acid-free tissue covered by plastic sheeting) to buffer humidity changes during transport.

Wrapping Techniques for Antiques

Modern stretch wrap and packing tape should never touch an antique finish. The adhesive pulls off shellac, lacquer, and wax finishes, leaving permanent marks. We start with acid-free tissue paper directly on the surface, followed by cotton moving blankets, secured with cotton ties or rubber bands. For pieces with protruding details like carved legs, finials, or ornamental hardware, we build individual padded bumpers from foam and tape them to themselves, not the furniture.

Disassembly: Proceed with Caution

Some antiques were built with hand-cut joints and wooden pegs rather than modern screws and bolts. Forcing these apart can split the wood. If a piece disassembles, we work slowly, using wooden mallets instead of hammers and penetrating oil on stubborn connections. Marble or glass inserts lift out. Drawers come out to reduce weight and prevent sliding during transport. We number each drawer and its slot with masking tape on the back.

Loading and Transport

Antiques ride in a padded, enclosed area of the truck, never against the sidewalls where road vibration transfers directly. We build a nest of blankets and position fragile pieces in the center, surrounded by softer items as buffers. Nothing stacks on top of an antique. For extremely valuable pieces like 18th-century highboys or hand-painted armoires, we build custom plywood crates with internal foam padding.

At the New Home

We unwrap antiques last, after the rest of the home is set up, to minimize the chance of bumps and dings from other activity. Pieces go directly to their designated spots. We avoid placing antiques against exterior walls in Miami homes, where temperature differentials between the A/C interior and the hot exterior wall create condensation zones that damage wood over time.
