# Moving Gym Equipment: Treadmills, Weights, and More
Home gyms have become a fixture in Miami homes, from garage setups in Kendall to dedicated workout rooms in Weston McMansions. The problem shows up on moving day: that Peloton, squat rack, and collection of iron plates aren't going to pack themselves, and they're too heavy and awkward for a standard moving crew without the right equipment.
Treadmills: Heavier Than You Think
A residential treadmill weighs between 200 and 350 pounds. Commercial-grade models push 400+. Most treadmills fold for storage, which also helps with transport, but the folding mechanism needs to be locked properly or the deck can swing open mid-carry. We remove the safety key, unplug the power cord and tape it to the frame, and fold the deck up before wrapping the console in moving blankets. The belt and deck surface scratch easily, so we avoid stacking anything on top during transport.

Free Weights and Plates
A full set of dumbbells from 5 to 75 pounds totals around 900 pounds. Add a set of Olympic plates and you're over 1,200 pounds of iron that needs to go into heavy-duty boxes or crates. Regular moving boxes will blow out under the weight. We use small reinforced boxes and limit each to 50-60 pounds. Rubber hex dumbbells can ride in milk crates. Never pack weights in trash bags; the sharp edges tear through, and a 45-pound plate landing on a foot is a trip to the ER.
Squat Racks and Power Cages
Full power cages from Rogue, REP, or Titan need to be disassembled. We label every bolt, pin, and j-hook during takedown, bag the hardware, and tape it to the corresponding frame piece. The uprights are long and awkward, so they get blanket-wrapped and secured against the truck wall. If your rack is bolted to a rubber floor, we pull the anchors and patch the holes with floor plugs.
Cardio Machines Beyond Treadmills
Ellipticals, rowing machines, and stationary bikes each have their quirks. Elliptical arms need to be locked in position or removed. Rowing machine seats slide off their rails if not secured. Peloton bikes require the screen to be removed and packed separately; a replacement screen costs over $400. We disconnect the screen, wrap it in a padded case, and treat it like fragile electronics.
Rubber Flooring and Stall Mats
Horse stall mats and interlocking rubber tiles are popular gym flooring in South Florida garages. Each 4x6 stall mat weighs about 100 pounds. We roll them up, secure with ratchet straps, and stand them upright in the truck. In humid Miami garages, the underside often has mold or mildew buildup, so we recommend cleaning before rolling.

Setting Up at the New Place
At the destination, we reassemble equipment in the designated room before bringing in the heavy stuff. Squat racks go together first since they're the largest footprint. We check that the floor can handle the weight, especially on upper levels. A full home gym can easily put 3,000+ pounds of concentrated load on a small area, and not every second-floor bonus room is built for that.
