# Should You Move or Replace Old Appliances

Every time we help a family move in Miami, someone asks this question: is it worth paying to move this old dishwasher, or should we just buy a new one at the new place? The answer depends on the age of the appliance, what it would cost to replace, and a few Miami-specific factors that most people overlook.

The Age Factor

Every appliance has an expected lifespan. If yours is past the halfway point, moving it means you're paying to transport something that will need replacing soon anyway.

Here are typical appliance lifespans:

  • 1Refrigerator: 10-15 years
  • 2Washer: 10-13 years
  • 3Dryer: 10-13 years
  • 4Dishwasher: 8-12 years
  • 5Oven/Range: 13-20 years
  • 6Microwave: 8-10 years

If your fridge is 12 years old, you're likely looking at only a few more years of service. Factor in the cost to move it (including disconnection, transport, and reconnection), and buying a new energy-efficient model at the new place might make more financial sense.

Moving Costs vs. Replacement Costs

Moving a major appliance typically costs between $100 and $300 depending on the complexity. A gas range that needs professional disconnection and reconnection will be on the higher end. A simple electric dryer will be on the lower end.

Compare that to replacement costs:

  • 1Budget refrigerator: $800-$1,200
  • 2Mid-range washer: $600-$900
  • 3Standard dishwasher: $400-$700
  • 4Gas range: $700-$1,500

If your appliance is relatively new and works well, moving it for $150 obviously beats spending $1,000 on a replacement. But if the appliance is aging and you've already been paying for repairs, the math shifts.

Miami-Specific Considerations

Humidity Damage

Miami's constant humidity takes a toll on appliances. Washers develop mold in rubber gaskets faster here than in drier climates. Refrigerator coils work harder in our heat, shortening compressor life. If you've noticed your appliances struggling, the move might be a natural breaking point to upgrade.

Energy Efficiency

Older appliances cost more to run, and in South Florida, where the AC already drives up your FPL bill, an inefficient refrigerator or dryer adds up. A new Energy Star refrigerator uses about 40% less electricity than a model from 15 years ago. Over five years, that energy savings can partially offset the purchase price.

Condo Restrictions

If you're moving into a Brickell high-rise or a building on Key Biscayne, check with the condo association. Some buildings restrict the size or type of appliances allowed. Older washers that don't have overflow protection may not be permitted. Gas appliances might be prohibited entirely if the building is all-electric. Find this out before you pay to move an appliance that won't be allowed in.

The New Home's Hookups

Older homes in areas like Coral Gables and Coconut Grove sometimes have outdated wiring or plumbing. Your current appliance might not be compatible without expensive modifications. Newer homes and condos often come with updated connections that work better with modern appliances.

When Moving the Appliance Makes Sense

  • 1The appliance is less than 5 years old
  • 2It's a high-end or professional-grade model (Sub-Zero, Viking, Wolf)
  • 3It's in great working condition with no recent repairs
  • 4The replacement cost is significantly higher than the moving cost
  • 5It fits the new home's space and hookup configuration

When Replacing Makes More Sense

  • 1The appliance is more than 8-10 years old
  • 2It's needed repairs in the past year
  • 3It's a basic model that's cheap to replace
  • 4The new home has different hookups (gas vs. electric)
  • 5You're downsizing and need a different size
  • 6The appliance doesn't meet your new building's requirements

A Third Option: Sell or Donate

If you're not moving the appliance and don't want to deal with disposal, sell it on Facebook Marketplace or OfferUp. Working appliances sell quickly in Miami. You can also donate to Habitat for Humanity ReStore locations in Miami-Dade, which accept working appliances and offer free pickup.
