# How to Move a Baby Grand Piano Safely
Baby grand pianos are the most common grand piano type in Miami homes. At 5 to 5'7" long and weighing between 500 and 600 pounds, they fit well in the condos and houses throughout Coral Gables, Coconut Grove, and the Beaches. But their size can be deceiving. Moving one still requires specialized knowledge, equipment, and a trained crew. Here's what the process actually looks like.
Why Baby Grands Can't Be Rolled Out the Door
Unlike upright pianos, a baby grand cannot simply be placed on a dolly and wheeled out of your home. The legs are not structural supports in the way most people think. They're bolted on, and they're designed to hold the piano stationary, not to absorb the forces of movement over uneven surfaces, thresholds, and ramps.

Attempting to move a baby grand on its legs risks snapping a leg at the bolt point, which sends 500+ pounds crashing to the floor. We've seen this happen when owners try to save money with inexperienced help.
The Step-by-Step Process
Step 1: Preparation

Close and lock the piano lid. If your model doesn't have a lid lock, secure it with painter's tape. Remove any items from the piano's surface. Close the fallboard (keyboard cover) and secure it as well.
Step 2: Wrap the Piano
The entire body gets wrapped in thick quilted moving blankets before anything else happens. On high-gloss models, we add a cotton sheet layer first to prevent the blanket texture from marking the finish. The blankets are secured with padded straps, never tape against the finish.
Step 3: Remove the Legs and Pedal Lyre
This is where training matters. One crew member supports the piano's weight while others unbolt the legs one at a time. The straight side leg (the left side when facing the keyboard) comes off first. Then the curved side leg. The front leg comes off last while the piano is carefully lowered onto the piano board.
The pedal lyre (the assembly underneath that holds the foot pedals) gets detached and wrapped separately. Each leg gets its own blanket or foam sleeve.
Step 4: Place on the Piano Board
A piano board is a heavy-duty padded skid, roughly the length of the piano body. Once all legs are off, the piano rests on its flat side on the board. The board allows the crew to strap the piano securely and slide it across floors without damaging either the piano or your flooring.
Step 5: Transport
The piano on its board goes up a ramp into the truck, where it's strapped against the side wall. It does not go in the middle of the truck where it could shift during braking or turns. The legs and pedal lyre travel in the same truck, padded and secured separately.
Step 6: Delivery and Reassembly
At the destination, the process reverses. The piano comes off the truck, legs are reattached in the reverse order of removal, and the piano is set in its final position. We always ask clients to decide on placement beforehand because repositioning a baby grand after assembly means going through the whole process again.
Miami-Specific Concerns for Baby Grand Moves
High-Rise Condos

Many baby grand owners in Brickell, Downtown, and Miami Beach live in high-rise buildings with freight elevator requirements, specific moving hours, and certificate of insurance demands. We handle the building coordination for you, including scheduling elevator time and providing insurance certificates to property management.
Humidity Exposure
The walk from your condo's freight elevator to the loading dock means outdoor exposure. We time this carefully, especially during summer months when heat and moisture are at their peak. For particularly valuable instruments, we use plastic sheeting over the blankets for moisture protection.
Floor Protection
Miami homes feature a lot of marble, tile, and polished concrete floors. We lay down floor runners along the entire path from the piano's location to the truck to prevent scratches and scuffs from the piano board.
