Piano Moving Equipment: What Professionals Use

# Piano Moving Equipment: What Professionals Use

One of the clearest differences between professional piano movers and general movers is the equipment they bring. A furniture dolly and some blankets won't cut it for a 700-pound grand piano going down a flight of stairs. Professional piano moving requires purpose-built tools, and each one exists because someone learned the hard way what happens without it. Here's what our crew loads onto the truck for every Piano Moving job in Miami.

The Piano Board

The piano board is the single most important piece of equipment for grand piano moves. It's a heavy-duty, padded skid, roughly 6 feet long and 2 feet wide, made from reinforced plywood or composite material with a non-slip padded surface.

When a grand piano's legs are removed, the instrument rests on its flat side on the piano board. The board distributes the piano's weight evenly, provides a stable platform for strapping, and allows the crew to slide the piano across floors without damaging either the instrument or the flooring.

A good piano board can support over 1,500 pounds. Consumer-grade alternatives (like furniture dollies or makeshift plywood platforms) flex under the weight and create instability. We've seen pianos roll off improvised boards during transport. The real thing matters.

Piano Dollies

Piano dollies come in several types, each designed for a specific situation:

Four-Wheel Furniture Dolly (Heavy-Duty)

A reinforced platform dolly with four swivel casters, rated for 800+ pounds. This is what upright pianos ride on during ground-level moves. The casters need to be large enough to roll over thresholds, transitions between flooring types, and the small lips between rooms that are common in Miami tile-floor homes.

Piano Skid Dolly

A specialized dolly that attaches to the piano board, turning it into a rolling platform. Once the grand piano is on its board, the skid dolly goes underneath, and the whole assembly can roll from the room to the truck.

Stair-Climbing Dolly

For moves involving stairs, a stair dolly (also called a stair climber) uses a ratchet or belt-track system to move heavy loads up and down stairs in a controlled manner. Professional piano stair dollies are rated for the weight and have braking systems that prevent the load from running away on the descent. This is different from the hand trucks you can rent at a hardware store.

Ramps

Loading a piano into a truck requires a ramp strong enough to hold both the piano's weight and the crew members walking alongside it. Professional piano ramps are wide, heavy-gauge aluminum or reinforced wood, with non-slip surfaces. They're typically rated for 1,500 to 2,000 pounds.

The ramp's angle matters too. A ramp that's too steep makes it hard to control the piano going up and dangerous going down. We carry ramps long enough to keep the angle manageable, even when the truck bed is high off the ground.

Straps and Securing Hardware

Moving Straps (Forearm Straps)

These are harness-style straps that loop under the piano and over the movers' forearms, distributing the weight more evenly across the body. They allow better grip and reduce the chance of the piano slipping from sweaty hands, which is a real factor during Miami's humid months.

Ratchet Straps

Used inside the truck to secure the piano against the wall during transport. The straps have padded sleeves at every contact point with the piano to prevent impression marks on the finish. Ratchet straps provide consistent, adjustable tension without the risk of slipping that rope or bungee cords create.

Stretch Wrap

Industrial-grade stretch wrap secures blankets in place on the piano's surface. It sticks to itself, not to the piano, which means no adhesive residue on the finish. We never apply tape directly to any piano surface.

Padding and Protection

Quilted Moving Blankets

Professional-grade quilted blankets, not the thin cotton ones sold at big-box stores. These blankets are thick, heavy, and provide genuine impact and scratch protection. A standard piano move uses 4 to 8 blankets depending on the instrument size.

Cotton Sheeting

For high-gloss finishes, a layer of soft cotton goes between the piano surface and the quilted blankets. This prevents the quilted texture from pressing patterns into finishes that become soft during Miami's outdoor heat exposure.

Floor Runners

Adhesive-backed floor runners protect tile, marble, and hardwood floors along the path from the piano to the truck. Miami homes feature a lot of polished stone and tile, and a piano dolly or board can scratch these surfaces without protection.

Tools for Disassembly

Grand piano moves require removing legs and pedal assemblies. Our crews carry:

  • 1Socket wrench sets matching common piano leg bolt sizes
  • 2Padded leg blocks for supporting the piano body during leg removal
  • 3Foam sleeves for individual leg wrapping
  • 4Hardware bags with labels for bolts and screws

Miami-Specific Equipment

Working in South Florida, we carry additional items:

  • 1Plastic sheeting for moisture barriers during humid-weather moves
  • 2Tarps for rain protection (kept accessible, not buried in the truck)
  • 3Battery-powered fans for air circulation in truck cargo areas during summer

Why Equipment Matters

The right equipment is what separates a safe piano move from a risky one. Every tool on this list exists to address a specific hazard. Without them, the crew is improvising, and improvisation with a 700-pound, $20,000 instrument is not a good strategy.

Benefits of Professional Piano Moving

Working with experienced Piano Moving specialists provides:

  • 1Expertise: Crews who know which equipment to use for every situation
  • 2Equipment: Every item listed above, maintained and ready to go
  • 3Insurance: Coverage that reflects the professionalism of the operation
  • 4Efficiency: The right tool for the right job means faster, safer moves
