Why Tight Spaces Are So Dangerous for Pianos
A standard interior door is 32 to 36 inches wide. An upright piano is typically 58 to 60 inches wide. A baby grand, even with legs removed and standing on its side on a piano board, can be 5 feet tall in that position. The math doesn't always work.
When a piano gets stuck in a doorway or stairwell, inexperienced movers tend to force it. They push, wiggle, and tilt. Every one of those actions puts stress on the instrument. Pianos can't flex. The cabinet is rigid, the frame is cast iron, and the internal components are precision-aligned. Forcing a piano through a tight space can crack the case, pop glue joints, damage the action, or scratch the finish on the door frame.
How We Handle Tight Doorways
Measure Before Moving Day
We always do a walkthrough or ask for measurements before the move. We need the width of every doorway, the ceiling height in any transitional spaces, and the turning radius at corners. For condos in Downtown Miami or Edgewater, we also check freight elevator dimensions.
Remove Doors and Hardware
The fastest way to gain 2 to 3 inches of clearance is to take the doors off their hinges. We pop the hinge pins, remove the door, and gain enough space to clear the piano. On older Miami homes with decorative molding around the door frames, we protect the trim with cardboard or blanket padding.
Angle and Rotate
For upright pianos going through a tight doorway, angling the piano slightly, so it goes through at a diagonal rather than straight on, can make the difference. This requires careful coordination between crew members because the piano's center of gravity shifts as it tilts.
For grand pianos on their side on a piano board, the crew may need to rotate the piano in the doorway. This only works when there's enough ceiling height and floor space for the rotation.
Staircase Strategies
Straight Staircases
Straight stairs are the most manageable. For uprights, the piano goes up or down on a stair-climbing dolly, with one crew member controlling the dolly and two others guiding and supporting the piano from below (going up) or above (going down). The key is maintaining a controlled, steady pace. Gravity wants to take over, and the crew has to resist that force the entire way.
For grand pianos on a board, straight stairs require the entire crew to carry the board. This is pure strength work, and it's why grand piano moves through multi-story homes require a four-person crew.
Curved and Spiral Staircases
Miami has no shortage of spiral and curved staircases, especially in the larger homes throughout Pinecrest, Coral Gables, and Key Biscayne. These are among the hardest piano moves we do.
A grand piano on a board cannot make a tight spiral turn. The options are to use a different entry point (a ground-floor window, a patio door), bring the piano in through an exterior route, or in rare cases, use a crane to lift the piano to a balcony.
Upright pianos have more flexibility on spiral stairs, but the curve still forces the crew to constantly adjust the angle while managing 500+ pounds on a slope. This takes experience and communication.
External Solutions
When interior routes won't work, we look at alternatives. Sliding glass doors and large windows can sometimes be removed to create wider access points. In some cases, especially for high-value grand pianos going into upper floors of homes without freight elevators, a crane lift through a window or balcony is the safest option.
