Broken glass is the single most common form of art damage during a move. We've seen it happen with everything from inexpensive IKEA frames to museum-quality pieces behind UV-protective glass. The good news is that glass breakage is almost entirely preventable with the right preparation. Here's how we protect framed art for moves across Miami and beyond.

Why Glass Breaks During Moves

Understanding the causes helps you prevent them. Glass in picture frames breaks for three main reasons: impact from other objects shifting in the truck, pressure from being stacked face-down with weight on top, and vibration during transit that causes the glass to rattle against the frame. Miami's roads don't help, either. The uneven pavement on some of our older streets in neighborhoods like Little Havana and Coconut Grove creates constant vibration that loosens glass in its frame channel.

Temperature changes also play a role. Moving glass-fronted art from a 72-degree air-conditioned home into 95-degree Miami heat creates thermal stress. The glass and frame expand at different rates, and if the glass is already snug in the frame, that expansion can cause cracking.

Step 1: Tape the Glass

This is the single most effective prevention step. Using painter's tape (never packing tape, which leaves residue), create an X from corner to corner across the glass. Then add a horizontal strip across the middle and a vertical strip down the center. This asterisk pattern holds the glass together if it does break, preventing shards from falling onto the artwork underneath.

For pieces with UV-protective or museum glass, check with the framer first. Some specialty coatings can be damaged by adhesive. In those cases, skip the tape and rely on extra cushioning instead.

Step 2: Protect the Surface

Place a sheet of glassine paper over the glass before wrapping. This adds a smooth barrier that prevents any wrapping material from pressing against or scratching the glass surface. For non-glass pieces under acrylic glazing, glassine also prevents static buildup that can attract dust and fibers.

Step 3: Cushion the Corners

The corners of a frame take the most impact during transit. Slide foam corner protectors onto all four corners. If you don't have purpose-built corner protectors, fold pieces of cardboard into L-shapes and tape them in place. The goal is to create a buffer zone around the most vulnerable points.

Step 4: Wrap and Box

Wrap the entire piece in a layer of bubble wrap with the bubbles facing outward, away from the glass. Secure it with painter's tape. Place the wrapped piece into a mirror box sized as close to the artwork's dimensions as possible. The less room for movement inside the box, the better. Fill gaps with crumpled packing paper until the piece feels firmly held.

For large pieces that exceed standard box sizes, two mirror boxes can be telescoped together or a custom crate can be built on site.

Step 5: Load Correctly in the Truck

Never lay framed artwork flat in the truck. Stand it upright, glass side facing the interior wall if possible, with padding between each piece. Our crews use padded A-frame racks that hold paintings vertically with soft dividers. This prevents pieces from leaning against each other and eliminates the downward pressure that causes glass failure.
