# How to Safely Move Fine Art and Sculptures

Whether you picked up a piece at Art Basel or inherited a family heirloom, moving fine art and sculptures around Miami takes more than bubble wrap and good intentions. Our team has relocated everything from massive oil paintings in Coral Gables estates to delicate glass sculptures in Brickell condos, and we know firsthand what can go wrong when art is treated like ordinary cargo.

Assess Every Piece Before You Pack

Before anything gets wrapped, you need a full inventory. Walk through your home and document every piece of art, noting its size, weight, material, and condition. Look for existing scratches, chips, or loose frames. Take close-up photos from multiple angles. This gives you a baseline if anything shifts during the move and makes insurance claims much simpler.

For sculptures, pay attention to how the piece balances. Is it top-heavy? Does it have protruding elements that could snap? A bronze figure on a narrow base needs a completely different packing approach than a smooth ceramic vase.

Choose the Right Materials

Standard moving supplies won't cut it for fine art. You'll need acid-free tissue paper, glassine sheets, foam corner protectors, and custom-cut cardboard. Acid-free materials prevent chemical reactions that can yellow or stain surfaces over time. For oil paintings, never let plastic wrap touch the paint surface directly, as it can stick and pull pigment.

Sculptures benefit from a combination of soft foam padding and rigid outer shells. We often build custom foam cradles that match the exact contours of three-dimensional pieces so nothing shifts inside the box.

Packing Framed Artwork

Start by taping an X pattern across the glass with painter's tape. If the glass breaks during transit, the tape holds the shards in place instead of letting them scratch the artwork underneath. Next, wrap the entire piece in glassine paper, then add a layer of bubble wrap with the bubbles facing outward. Place the wrapped piece into a mirror box or a telescoping picture box.

Fill any remaining gaps with packing paper. The piece should feel snug but not compressed. Too much pressure can warp frames or crack glass just as easily as too little padding can.

Handling Sculptures and Three-Dimensional Pieces

Sculptures present unique challenges because of their irregular shapes and varying center of gravity. Remove any detachable parts and wrap them separately. Wrap the main body in acid-free tissue, followed by foam sheeting. For heavy stone or metal pieces, custom wooden crates provide the structural support that cardboard cannot.

In Miami, where many collectors own outdoor sculptures meant for waterfront terraces, we often deal with pieces weighing several hundred pounds. These require equipment like furniture dollies, lifting straps, and sometimes small cranes for safe removal.

Loading and Transport

Art should always be loaded last and unloaded first. Paintings travel best standing upright, never flat. Flat stacking creates pressure on the center of the canvas, which can cause sagging or cracking. In our trucks, we use padded A-frame racks that hold paintings vertically with soft dividers between each piece.

Temperature matters, too. Miami's heat and humidity can wreak havoc on artwork, especially during summer months when truck interiors can climb well past 100 degrees. We use climate-controlled vehicles to keep conditions stable throughout the move.
