How Grands Get Moved
A grand piano cannot be rolled out of your home on its legs. The process starts by closing and locking the lid, then removing each leg and the pedal lyre. The piano is then carefully tipped onto its side and placed on a piano board, a padded, reinforced skid designed to support the instrument's full weight.
The piano rides on the board, wrapped in blankets and secured with straps, from your home to the truck and then to the destination. On arrival, the process reverses: the piano comes off the board, legs go back on, and the instrument is set into its final position.
This disassembly and reassembly adds time, complexity, and requires specific tools and knowledge. You need to know exactly which bolts hold the legs, how to support the piano's weight as legs come off, and how to avoid scratching the finish during the flip.
Grand Piano Risks
Grands are vulnerable during the tipping process. If the crew doesn't properly support the body as the legs come off, the piano can drop. The lid, which on many grands is a single piece of polished wood, scratches easily. In Miami's humidity, the finish can also become sticky when exposed to outdoor air, making it more prone to marks.
