# Upright vs Grand Piano Moving: Key Differences
Not all piano moves are the same. The techniques, equipment, and crew size needed to move an upright piano versus a grand piano are very different, and understanding those differences can save you from costly mistakes. Our team in Miami handles both types regularly, and the approach changes completely depending on what's sitting in your living room.
Upright Piano Moving: Compact but Heavy
Upright pianos stand vertically, with the strings and soundboard running up and down inside the cabinet. They typically weigh between 300 and 800 pounds, with larger studio uprights and older models on the heavier end.

How Uprights Get Moved
Upright pianos stay in their normal standing position throughout the entire move. The crew wraps the piano in heavy moving blankets, secures the lid and keyboard cover, and lifts it onto a four-wheel piano dolly. The piano rolls out on the dolly, goes up a ramp into the truck, and gets strapped against the wall.
The main challenge with uprights in Miami is stairs. Many older buildings in neighborhoods like Little Havana, Wynwood, and parts of Miami Beach have walkup apartments with narrow staircases. Moving a 500-pound upright down two flights of stairs requires a strong crew, a stair-climbing technique with straps, and careful coordination. You cannot simply roll a dolly down stairs.
Common Upright Risks
The biggest risk with uprights is tipping. Because the weight is distributed vertically, they can become top-heavy if tilted too far. Movers also need to be careful with the back panel, which on many uprights is thin wood that cracks easily if bumped.
Grand Piano Moving: A Different Operation Entirely
Grand pianos range from baby grands at around 5 feet and 500 pounds to concert grands at 9 feet and over 1,000 pounds. They're longer, lower, and far more complex to move.
How Grands Get Moved
A grand piano cannot be rolled out of your home on its legs. The process starts by closing and locking the lid, then removing each leg and the pedal lyre. The piano is then carefully tipped onto its side and placed on a piano board, a padded, reinforced skid designed to support the instrument's full weight.
The piano rides on the board, wrapped in blankets and secured with straps, from your home to the truck and then to the destination. On arrival, the process reverses: the piano comes off the board, legs go back on, and the instrument is set into its final position.
This disassembly and reassembly adds time, complexity, and requires specific tools and knowledge. You need to know exactly which bolts hold the legs, how to support the piano's weight as legs come off, and how to avoid scratching the finish during the flip.
Grand Piano Risks
Grands are vulnerable during the tipping process. If the crew doesn't properly support the body as the legs come off, the piano can drop. The lid, which on many grands is a single piece of polished wood, scratches easily. In Miami's humidity, the finish can also become sticky when exposed to outdoor air, making it more prone to marks.
